The Appalachian
State University Fencing Club had a very successful month of March,
earning several wins at two North Carolina fencing tournaments.
The club won in both team and individual events, with several members
scoring high enough to go on to the national tournament.
Sophomore information systems major Brendan McConville said the
club has been pretty successful this year.
We have a few members who are performing well enough to travel
to other locations to compete, McConville said Tuesday.
Sophomore sociology major Gretchen E. McHenry said more people qualified
this year for the national competition than in past years.
In the team competition at the tournament, the mens foil team
won first place, and the men and womens epee teams won second
place, according to www.ncfencing.org.
At the March 1 tournament, the club placed high in several events.
In the Foil E and Under Division, Victoria L. Genther placed third
and Joshua D. Ledford placed second.
In the Foil C Division McConville took first place, and senior geology
major Greg Mistler and senior information systems major David A.
Oder tied for third place.
In the Epee D Division Ledford took second place, and in the Epee
C Division sophomore criminal justice major Jarrod A. Sargent took
second place, while Oder took third.
At the March 22 tournament, club members also scored high, with
Oder taking first place in the Foil C division, and junior information
systems major John S. Knoy taking first in the Epee E and Under
Division.
Freshman psychology major Trent E. Hazzard took third place in the
Foil E and Under Division, and McConville took third place in the
Foil C Division.
Senior anthropology major Nick L. Jarman took second place in the
Epee E and Under Division, with Brett Swaim scoring third place
in the Epee C Division.
In addition to scoring well at the tournaments, several members
have placed high in the state point system.
McConville is third in the state point system.
In the womens division, Genther is second place, while McHenry
is in 11th place.
The Fencing Club meets on the balcony of Varsity Gymnasium on Tuesday
and Thursday nights. About 72 members are officially in the club
as of this year, and more are welcomed to join.
Next year the group hopes to raise the number of people who travel
to competitions and to become more well known in the community,
the state and the nation.
We hope to get more freshmen involved and to keep them involved,
McHenry said. |
