Track wins second triple crown Brad Norman
Sports Beat
There is a dynasty in the making at Appalachian State University, or maybe the dynasty is already running at full steam.
Appalachian State competed in both the Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held in Boone April 18 and 19, at which both teams placed first. The first place finishes brought triple crowns for the men’s and women’s teams.
The triple crowns were achieved by winning the conference championship in cross country and both outdoor and indoor track.
For the men, this is their second triple crown in a row, and only a second place finish in the 2001 Indoor Championships kept them from having three straight triple crowns.
The Appalachian men’s team started the day off with the 100-meter relay and the team finished first and set a new school and Southern Conference record with a time of 39.91 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Appalachian swept the top three places. Jason Green finished first with a time of 10.42 seconds, good enough to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Behind Green were teammates Ernest Wiggins and Sean Jackson.
Green also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.27 seconds and claimed the award of the 2003 Southern Conference Most Outstanding Track Performer.
Appalachian combined the top finishes by the runners with a good field performance to outdistance Western Carolina University, who finished second with 178 points compared to Appalachian’s 229.
Gerald Foreman, Arthur Robertson, Deon Britton, Holt McPherson, Dan Utley and Matt Carr all placed second or third in their respective field event, and Anthony Greer and Jon Norman placed first in the shot put and pole vault.
The women’s team got off to a slower start than the men’s and would have to rely on the field events for the majority of their points.
Sarah Primeau and Janelle Silvermann finished second and third in the 5,000-meter run, Jennifer Claud finished second in the 100-meter dash and Katie Sujkowski placed first in the 1,500-meter run and the 200-meter dash.
Ronda and Tondra White gave Appalachian a tremendous effort and allowed ASU to surpass Georgia Southern in total points.
Ronda White finished in first place in the long jump, 100-meter hurdles and triple jump, with the latter two being good enough to send her to NCAA Regionals.
Tondra finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, triple jump and high jump and finished first in the heptathlon.
LaShana Poole, 2003 Most Outstanding Field Performer, finished first in the discus and second in the shot put.
Behind Poole in the shot put was Beverly Burnett finishing third and Suzanne Makinson finishing second in the pole vault.
Overall, the men’s and women’s teams will compete in the NCAA Regionals in five events.
