Game one
Furman University’s Tom Mastny continued his mastery of not only Appalachian State University but the rest of the league, pitching a complete game and picking up the win as Furman dusted off Appalachian 5-2 Friday night at Furman Stadium.
Mastny struck out nine batters while giving up only four hits and one earned run.
After a quick run in the first inning, Furman added three more early runs in the second.
Nick Wajda walked and A.J. Daviduik hit a single to put two men on base.
Craig Caudill, who went 4-5 in the game, singled to drive in Wajda, and Derek Norman hit another single after that to score Daviduik.
Appalachian starting pitcher Nick Peterson then walked the next two batters, one of them with the bases loaded, to give Furman its final run of the inning and to increase Furman’s lead to 4-0.
Bucs sweep ASU, 6-1 Brad Norman
Sports Beat
The East Tennessee State University tennis team rolled through Appalachian State University last Wednesday as it continued its run toward a sixth regular season Southern Conference championship.
The win put East Tennessee at 7-1 in the conference while Appalachian dropped to 5-4.
The Bucs started off strong and beat Appalachian in the doubles competition, three games to zero.
In the first doubles game Marcos Pavlovich and Alejandro Salazar defeated Appalachian’s Erez Cohen and Doug Ornsby 8-3.
Matching the score at 8-3 in the second game, Diego Iglesias and Moises Serrano defeated ASU’s Andrew Taylor and Jason Nius.
The duo of Jacob Stapleton and Alon Cohen came closer than Appalachian’s previous two games but still fell to Fernando Fiuri and Federico Ochoa 8-6.
The team would not fare any better in single’s competition losing five games and mustering only one win.
Erez Cohen squeezed by Pavolich in the first game, 7-6, and then won the second game easily to complete the match sweep.
No remaining ASU players could score points for the team, as the remaining five matches were all swept by East Tennessee.
