Budget limbo still unfavorable for ASU Carrie Baker

  The state legislature’s budget “will not be a very favorable budget for UNC,” Chancellor Francis T. Borkowski said Thursday.
   Borkowski said due to poor state revenues, Governor Mike Easley’s proposed budget could see further cuts.
Currently Easley’s budget slashes Appalachian State University’s proposed budget increases by 60.12 percent, leaving the university with $1,080,894 in recommended increases.

   The Jewish Students of Appalachian (JSA) hosted the “Israel at Heart” forum in the Multicultural Center last Wednesday.
   The panel, which is part of a nationwide tour, consisted of three Israeli students sharing their experiences of living in Israel.

   Nurit Tezazu was the first to share her experiences. At the age of 18, Tezazu chose to take on volunteer work over joining the military. All Israelis, when they turn 18, are required by the government to choose one or the other.

   The newly begun Student Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is giving students with exceptionalities attending Appalachian State University, as well as schools in Boone and the surrounding community, a chance to improve the quality of their education.
   The council is a chapter of the National Council for Exceptional Children.
Blimling selects Nix as 69th editor-in-chief Katrina Walker

   James M. Nix, a senior journalism major, has been selected as J. Adam Bennett’s successor as editor-in-chief of The Appalachian for the 2003-04 academic year by Vice Chancellor for Student Development Gregory S. Blimling.
   “The most valuable experiences of my college career have been in [the student publications] office,” Nix said Saturday.

   “Organizational Life 101,” part of the Leadership 101 series, is a lecture geared toward discovering effective ways to recruit and maintain members of campus organizations and clubs.
   The Appalachian State University Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL) continues the series Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Linville Falls Room of W.H. Plemmons Student Union.

Police following leads in serial rapist case
   UNCG –Greensboro police, students and surrounding University of North Carolina at Greensboro residents are hoping increased awareness, extra safety measures and old-fashioned vigilance will help them flush out a rapist who has assaulted at least seven women near campus since December, according to The Seahawk.
    “People are on alert now, they’re being more cautious and noticing things,” Greensboro police detective M.D. Matthews said. “We’re getting a lot of leads in the case and working closely with the UNCG community.”
