SAAB’s first-annual Battle of the Sports Brad Norman
Sports Beat
Imagine your favorite Appalachian State University athlete.
Imagine this athlete competing in an event like an egg toss or a three-legged race.
Combine the competitiveness of varsity athletes, pit them against each other in events much like a field day in fifth grade, and the result is the Battle of the Sports.
Throughout the year at Appalachian, students have flocked to Kidd Brewer Stadium, George M. Holmes Convocation Center and Red Lackey Field to see the athleticism and talent Appalachian athletes possess.
Before the year is over, athletes from all varsity teams will come together to compete in the Student Athlete Advisory Board’s (SAAB) first-ever Battle of the Sports.
SAAB president Cam Ormsby was chosen by the NCAA last May to attend a leadership conference, where this idea was spawned.
Ormsby and SAAB will are host the Battle of the Sports Monday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Varsity Gymnasium.
“This is an effort to bring more cohesion and unity between the teams,” Ormsby said. “The [SAAB] and the administration wanted to provide an environment that lets athletes see each other outside the realm of competition.”
The event is set up like church picnic or field day type event with events occurring simultaneously.
Some of the events to be included will be a three-legged race, an egg toss, a homerun derby, a 50-meter dash and a tug-of-war.
“Athletes often see each other in games or in the training room, but rarely get the chance to see each other in a fun environment,” Ormsby said. “Between school and sports, there is not much time for anything else.”
All top finishers will be awarded a certain amount of points and the varsity team with the most points at the end of the night will be announced the winner and will claim the trophy.
“We actually made a nice trophy for it to give to the winner,” Ormsby said. “I think we’re going to call this the Yosef Cup.
“The team that wins will get to keep the trophy for a year. We are hoping that this becomes an annual event. The SAAB and I would love to have students and faculty come to watch and have a good laugh. It will be competitive, but the main reason for this is to get the athletes together and have fun,” he said.
