The Appalachian
State University Staff Council hopes to fund future scholarships
through a Silent Auction to be held Thursday, April 17 from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of W.H. Plemmons Student Union.
Each year, the Staff Council awards scholarships to students who
are dependents of Appalachian State employees and who have been
accepted as degree-seeking students in an institution of higher
education, according to a Staff Council letter.
The last Silent Auction was held in the 1990s and was not necessary
since due to the fund sustaining well, Staff Council secretary,
Silent Auction head and office manager for the Center for Student
Involvement and Leadership Tina R. Parlier said Monday.
There are two types of scholarships given.
The Staff Council Scholarship Fund is the annual award, which pools
money from the Silent Auction and allows recipients to go to any
higher education institution. The Endowed Scholarship Fund is awarded
from individual donations and is handed to any dependent for use
at Appalachian State, Scholarship Coordinator and Staff for Leadership
and Education Studies Jennifer P. Ware said Monday.
Last year, the Staff Council awarded four scholarships of varying
amounts, and this year they noticed the fund was getting low, Parlier
said.
[This Silent Auction] is to get the ball rolling again and
to make the scholarship successful [in the future], Parlier
said. Wed like to fill it up and maybe give the deserving
students a larger amount or maybe spread it out to more deserving
students.
The awards depend on the effectiveness of the Silent Auction, but
every year the Staff Council awards anywhere from four to six scholarships.
The amounts fluctuate from $150 to $550 depending on how much a
student needs assistance, Ware said.
Parlier said the staff and Staff Council are working hard and long
to make something like this happen for the sole benefit of others.
Staff members worked tirelessly to bring quality donations to the
Silent Auction from area businesses and the university.
This is really by the staff, for the staff, Parlier
said.
Items to be auctioned include a $400 Sony Home Theater System, a
framed Appalachian State diploma carrier with an official seal,
$250 worth of perfume from Belk department store, watches, tools,
bike tune-ups, lamps and ham.
Parlier said she welcomes anybody to come and join the fun of the
Silent Auction. Volunteers assist in the event all day.
The deadline for applications for the scholarship(s) is April 15
and all submissions go to Ware. A decision for the recipient(s)
will take place in early May when all in charge will meet for a
determination and allocation of funds, Ware said.
Those eligible must be a dependent of an S.P.A. (State Personnel
Act) staff member, meet elevated GPA requirements and have some
community involvement, Parlier said. |
