Patterson to organize sexual assault prevention Carrie Baker

  During a time of heightened sexual assault awareness, Appalachian State University has added the position of    “Coordinator for Sexual Assault Prevention” to the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL) staff.
   Dean of Students Susie L. Greene said talk of the new position began last December.
CIA to continue efforts despite grant outcome

    The Committee for Integrity at Appalachian State University (CIA) has been on the radar recently due to a national organization’s interest in the results of the Sexual Victimization of Women at Appalachian survey.
   The survey, completed last spring by the CIA, reported 394 women, or one out of every 18, are raped during a four-year period at Appalachian, with a total of 1,679 rapes or attempted rapes, roughly one out of every 7 women. According to the survey, numbers match national results.
Group passes ‘support troops,’ religion bills

Off-campus senators Christian H. Greve and Aaron M. Whitener respond to questions reguarding the “support our troops” bill Tuesday evening.
   Considering four pieces of legislation in a single session, the Student Government Association (SGA) passed bills supporting coalition soldiers and endorsing religious exemptions for candle use.
Controversy on ‘Support the Troops’ bill
   The main controversy at the meeting surrounded a bill endorsing support for members of American and coalition armed forces.
   Many senators were concerned over grammatical and structure errors in the bill. In the end, however, the bill passed 29-2-11.
Staff Council Silent Auction for students

   The Appalachian State University Staff Council hopes to fund future scholarships through a Silent Auction to be held Thursday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of W.H. Plemmons Student Union.
   Each year, the Staff Council awards scholarships to students who are dependents of Appalachian State employees and who have been accepted as degree-seeking students in an institution of higher education, according to a Staff Council letter.
‘Pieces of She’ to combine female-submitted works on stage Justin Boulmay

   The department of theatre and dance will perform its annual program “Pieces of She” April 15-17 at 8 p.m. in the I.G. Greer Arena Theatre.
   The show is a conglomeration of performances based on poetry, prose, art and other works submitted by female students at Appalachian State University, assistant director and senior theatre education major Melinda M. Loughhead of Charlotte said Monday.
Student skill showcased at FCS spring fashion show Jessica Sellers

   Several classes in the department of family and consumer sciences (FCS) at Appalachian State University are combining their efforts and skills in the upcoming FCS spring showcase and fashion show.
   The participating classes include clothing construction, apparel CAD (computer aided design), apparel design and production, flat pattern design and history of costumes.
Auto accident takes life of ASU student
   Ms. Ebonie Marshae Jackson, 21, Fayetteville, died Monday, April 7, 2003 in an automobile accident in Cabbarus County while returning to Boone from Fayetteville.
    She was born Jan. 6, 1982 to Mrs. Pamela M. Jackson.
    Jackson was a senior information systems major involved with the ASU Gospel Choir and Black & Gold Elite Dancers. During her college career, she was also employed at W.H. Plemmons Student Union, secretary of the Mountaineer Misses and Misters and member of the Appalachian Popular Programming Society (APPS).
    The memorial book for Jackson is available for signing on a memorial table located on the first floor of the student union.
    Services will be conducted today at 3 p.m. at Lewis Chapel Baptist Church in Fayetteville by Rev. Dr. John Fuller Sr.
    Burial will follow in Rock Fish Memorial Park in Fayetteville.
    The family will receive friends today from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Canningham and Sons Mortuary.
