ASU suffers defeat from Elon Allie Woods
Sports Minor Beat
Erez Cohen claimed the only victory and point for the Appalachian State University men’s tennis team as they suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Elon University Phoenix last weekend.
Along with the help of Doug Ormsby, Cohen was able to push his doubles record to 13-2 with the doubles victory also being the only one for the Mountaineers.
“Me and my partner Doug Ormsby won the double and came out strong,” Cohen said. “I was having a little bit of a confidence problem and then we came out strong and won doubles, and it gave me the motivation to win my singles quickly, and I wanted to come out strong and win for the team.”
Cohen was able to win quickly as he won 6-0, 6-3 over Nathan Lefevre.
“I was playing well because I was mixing it up a lot,” Cohen said. “I was playing a lot of serve and volley. I was returning the ball well today and hitting the ball better than most days.”
At No. 2 Ormsby was unable to break through against Pramote Malasitt as he went down 7-6, 6-1. Ben Shuster never seemed to get it going in the No. 3 match, going down 6-1, 6-1. Jacob Stapleton played the closest match at No. 6 but was unable to really get it going against Richard Dutton, eventually losing 7-5, 6-3.
The Mountaineers return to action at the Southern Conference Tournament on April 9.
