Four Mountaineers qualify for regionals ASUTrackandField.com
The Mountaineers traveled to Paul Derr Stadium at North Carolina State University last weekend to compete in the Adidas Raleigh Relays. Appalachian track and field competed amongst some of the best teams in the country. The athletes responded to the heightened level of competition by earning several NCAA Regional Qualifying performances.
Suzanne Makinson vaulted a season’s best 3.66 meters, which is approximately 12 feet. The effort earned her a trip to George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., for the regional meet. Ronda White continued her successful track season, earning a qualifier in the triple jump. Her 12.33 meter effort was well above the 12.19 standard. White was also only 6 inches shy of a qualifier in the long jump.
On the men’s side, the 100 meter relay team sprinted to an impressive time of 40.39, easily earning a regional qualifying mark. Ernest Wiggins was also just shy of such a mark in the 100-meter, running 10.57 seconds (10.50). A few other near misses included the women’s 400-meter relay team, which ran 3:47.15 (3:45), Sarah Primeau’s 17:16 in the 5,000-meter (17:00), and Katie Sujkowski’s 4:35.06 in the 1500 meters (4:31)
Several Mountaineers also competed at Davidson College last weekend at the Irwin Belk Invitational. Notable performances included a NCAA regional qualifying performance by freshman Anthony Greer in the shot put. Greer won both the shot and the discus events with his 16.46-meter throw in the shot put, easily qualifying him for the regional meet. LaShana Poole also won the shot put and discus events for the women.
