Wildcats wins series over Mountaineers GoASU.com
Sam Navarro hit a two-out, three-run double in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie, and Matt Dellinger tossed three scoreless innings of relief to help Davidson College top Appalachian State University Sunday afternoon 5-2.
Davidson swept the three-game series from Appalachian to improve to 9-13 on the season and 4-10 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian fell to 6-17 overall and 1-8 in the league.
The Wildcats had been shutout on just two hits and a walk through the first six innings by Mountaineer southpaw Taylor Craig (1-3). But after retiring the first batter in the seventh on a lazy fly to left, Craig ran into trouble.
Alex Entrekin and D.J. Dailey both walked, and Ronnie Shore singled to center to load the bases. Craig then hit Andrew Musashe with a pitch to force in a run and end Craig’s afternoon.
Andrew Kline was summoned from the bullpen, and Jay Heafner lofted a sacrifice fly to left, tying the score at two.
But Justin Hartanov was also hit by a pitch, loading the bases once again. That brought Navarro to the plate, who drove a ball just over the head of the left fielder, clearing the bases.
The five runs in the seventh made up the only inning of the game in which Davidson had more than one batter reach base.
Wildcat starting pitcher Matt Hood matched Craig through the first five innings, yielding just one hit and one walk in that span. The Mountaineers touched Hood for a run in the sixth, however, on a two-out RBI single by Tim Johnson.
Appalachian chased Hood in the seventh with three consecutive singles to start the frame.
The third hit was a bunt by Derek Smith, and in an attempt to throw him out, the throw got away allowing the second Appalachian run to score.
With runners at first and third and nobody out, Dellinger (2-4) was brought in from the bullpen to minimize the damage. After getting the first hitter he faced out on a called third strike, he induced a double-play grounder to short to end the inning.
The Mountaineers had one last gasp in the ninth with a pair of two-out singles, but Dellinger got the final out on a comebacker to the mound.
Davidson managed four hits in the game, and Navarro’s double was the lone extra-base hit for either team. Graham Thompson had three of Appalachian’s nine singles on the afternoon, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk.
Next up for Davidson is a game on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Appalachian hosts Winthrop University today at 3 p.m.
