Appalachian State running sports coach John Weaver was named Southeast Region Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year.
The United States Track Coaches Association has named Appalachian State University head coach John Weaver the Southeast Region Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year.
Weaver is one of nine regional winners named by the collegiate coaching association in both men’s and women’s indoor track and field.
“This is an acknowledgement for a deserving individual and will bring recognition to not only the track program but the school as well,” Athletic Director Roachel Laney said.
Weaver is the director of both track and field and cross country at Appalachian for both the men’s and women’s programs.
This is his fifth season as men’s track coach and 20th as women’s track and cross-country coach.
“I was pretty excited,” Weaver said. “It’s a big honor especially when voted on by your peers. The region includes Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia, and out of that I think I might have been the only coach in the region to win the conference championship so that helped me I’m sure.”
Weaver has been named Southern Conference Coach of the Year 17 times in track and four times for cross country. This is his first region coach of the year award.
The track team has completed two parts of the triple crown by sweeping the men’s and women’s cross country and indoor titles. Now they set their sites on the outdoor title in the conference championships to be held in Boone on April 18 and 19.
“I’m proud of the team; they’ve done well,” Weaver said. “A clean sweep of the outdoor and triple crown will hopefully mean as much to them as I want it to.”
