ASU experiences ‘Miracle on Ice’ by beating VCU in championship Brad Norman

The championship title for ASU’s club ice hockey team is considered to be a “Miracle on Ice” after a struggling season. They defeated the top three overall teams from the division.
     “The Miracle on Ice” is known throughout the hockey community as being one of the greatest and most historic upsets of all time.
In 1980, American college students played the Russian National Team in the final game of the Olympics and won.
   The game reached outlets much farther than the rink in Lake Placid, and it has historical and political implications.

During the bottom of the eighth the Mountaineers scored six runs to claim the lead, which led to a win over the Bulldogs.
   After falling to an early game deficit and not being able to amount to much offensively, the Appalachian State University baseball team rallied in the mid and late innings to pull out the victory over the University of North Carolina at Asheville 11-10 Tuesday afternoon.
   Ty Racette’s infield chopper allowed Travis Hunnicutt to score from third base with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and give Appalachian the lead it would need to seal the victory. Racette finished the day 3-for-4, with two RBIs and a run scored.

Appalachian State running sports coach John Weaver was named Southeast Region Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year.
   The United States Track Coaches Association has named Appalachian State University head coach John Weaver the Southeast Region Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year.
   Weaver is one of nine regional winners named by the collegiate coaching association in both men’s and women’s indoor track and field.
   “This is an acknowledgement for a deserving individual and will bring recognition to not only the track program but the school as well,” Athletic Director Roachel Laney said.
