Members
of several clubs and organizations at Appalachian State University
combine their efforts for a Sexual Assault Awareness Week beginning
Monday.
The week begins with the Stick Together Program, sponsored by the
Counseling Center.
Stick Together is an underlining theme for what were
doing for sexual assault awareness, Counseling & Psychological
Services Center psychologist Dr. Jennie M. Cassidy said.
Cassidy said all of the events are important, but there are a few
highlights of the week. The ZOSO party, a program by Men Against
Rape (MAR) and Sex and a Six PackNow What? are
just a few of the main events.
The Sex and a Six PackNow What? program will be
held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of W.H. Plemmons
Student Union.
Sex and a Six Pack-Now What? is a follow up to
the Sex and a Six Pack program. Our hope is that it gives people
a better understanding about the reporting process involved with
sexual assault, Cassidy said.
Cassidy said she would love for every student at Appalachian to
participate in some part of the week, and that the first step in
preventing sexual assault is to educate people, which she said she
hopes the week will do.
MAR will sponsor a program titled, By Men, For Men,
Wednesday at 9 p.m. in the Calloway Peak Room of the student union.
Our focus is going to be on everyday male behaviors that are
disrespectful toward women and ultimately contribute to such high
male to female rape statistics, sophomore English major and
MAR member Brian Hodges said.
This is our first major program in what we hope to be a continuing
process of raising awareness of male behaviors that contribute to
rape and things we can do in order to prevent it, Hodges said.
The first 100 people to the Stick Together and MAR programs will
receive a free ticket to Thursdays ZOSO party.
The ZOSO party is an event where people can practice the Stick
Together program and get awarded for it, Cassidy said. It
is scheduled for Thursday at 9 p.m. in Legends.
MAR will also hold an information session and a benefit with Tau
Kappa Epsilon and Student Government Association members Friday
at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively.
The week will end April 7 with a Candlelight Vigil. The vigil is
sponsored by the Womens Center. Women who have been raped
will tell their stories and be honored for their survival.
