COMMENTARY

Sports Major Beat

For once I have nothing to say.
Our country is in a war, sports fans are in the middle of the biggest tournament of the year, and I still can’t think of a thing to fill the void on this page.
No, I will not go on about the differences of men and women or even try and give some insight on the “ins and outs” of Appalachian State University. Instead I might just hit the enter button 15 to 20 times and leave a huge opening in the middle of my opinion for students and other readers of The Appalachian to color or do what they please with.
But what would that accomplish. Nothing, really.
Instead I have come up with a “Top Ten” list of sorts. Dave Letterman I am not, and I certainly don’t have a talented team of writers sitting in my office thinking up clever little one-liners, but I have been known to be witty from time to time, so we’ll see if that is with me on this.
Top Ten Current Issues I Chose Not to Write About in this Article.
    10)   The NCAA tournament, the most obvious choice for a sports writer to write about in the middle of March, but that’s just too obvious. Wake Forest University is out, the University of Maryland is playing not to lose, Duke University is playing, good, and my bracket got ruined today after the University of Louisville loss.
    9)   WAR. Every channel on the television is talking war, and I do not want to waste my time trying to formulate a coherent argument to print in this newspaper. IF none of you know what WAR really means, it’s an acronym for We Are Right, so go order some freedom fries.
    8)   “Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars.” Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Plus the last time I tackled that issue I was either looked at as insightful or an idiot. Sorry girls.
    7)   The athletics proposal and the increase of fees yet again. Has anyone heard of the term ‘beating a dead horse’? Well that’s what that would be.
    6)   Graduation and parting ways with this lovely town of Boone. I have been here for five years now, and I think that I have read ‘bye bye Boone’ stories more times than I have not.
    5)   On that note, how about the importance of attending class and doing well in school. Um … I think not. If y’all don’t know that then you need more than just a lecture from me. How about a swift kick in the … beeeep.
    4) In recent population polls, it is now a well-known fact that Hispanics are the majority of the minorities in the United States. I have seen countless commercials geared toward Hispanics lately, and a lot of signs also read in Spanish. Last time I checked this was America and we all speak English, just a thought.
    3)   Appalachian baseball and the road trip they are forced to endure every year because of Boone weather. Well, our baseball team isn’t really that good and you would like to think that playing top-ranked ACC teams would give us experience, but all they really get is a huge one-sided game not in their favor.
    2)   The 12 prisoners of war that Iraq has accrued as a tactic to one up the United States. Bush said he expects for them to be treated fairly and to be unharmed. Bear with me on this, but does he really expect for POWs to be put up in a nice hotel and given room service? And would we be in this situation currently if Saddam was a nice man? That’s what I thought.
    1)   IGNORANCE. Possibly the one thing in this world that truly lights a fire under me. In a world full of opportunities, there are so many people that don’t see the real story or even try to find out what is right. Instead they sit in their ignorance, happy they don’t know anything and then try and argue with no foot to stand on.
