Police Beat
One suspect is in custody, while another is still being pursued, on felony assault charges following the March 4 stabbing of a 21-year-old Appalachian State University student.
The lead investigator in the case, Capt. William Greene of the Town of Boone Police Department, declined further comment following three separate press releases from the department.
Julius Laure Pickett, 21, became involved in an altercation with a pedestrian while driving on Charlotte Ann Lane in Boone. What began as an argument resulted in Pickett being stabbed in the neck, investigators with the Town of Boone Police Department said.
Kenneth Bryan Taylor, 22, Boone, is charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. After turning himself in, he was placed under a $10,000 bond by the Watauga County magistrate and scheduled to appear in Watauga County District Court.
The second suspect, Paul Fewell Motten, 21, Boone, is charged with accessory after the fact to assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Motten, however, has yet to be arrested because police have not discovered his whereabouts.
According to police reports, Pickett was driving his girlfriend’s vehicle, giving her a ride back to her residence hall room. One of the suspects was standing in the travel lane of the road and struck the outside mirror of the car.
Pickett then stopped the car and became engaged in a verbal dispute with one of the perpetrators. According to reports, another perpetrator then entered the fray and the argument escalated into a physical confrontation.
Pickett was transported to Watauga County Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery to treat the wound.
He has since been released and is reported to be in good condition.
Motten, who remains on the run, is described as a 6-foot tall white male with a medium build and possibly blue eyes. At the time of the assault he was reported to be wearing a rastafari-style hat and a camouflage hat.
Anyone with information pertaining to the whereabouts of this individual is encouraged to contact Watauga County Crimestoppers at 262-4555 or the Boone Police Department at 262-4500. A reward may be offered.
