Appalachian’s D.C. house lease not renewed

   After 25 years of use, Appalachian State University will lose its lease on the Appalachian House as of Nov. 30.
   Since its acquisition, the Appalachian House, or AppHouse, located at 22 Third St. in Washington, D.C., has been used by Appalachian faculty, staff and students who are attending conferences, academic meetings or conducting research in the Washington, D.C. area.
   The AppHouse is one of two distance-learning spaces available to Appalachian students and faculty, the other being a loft in midtown New York.

   Registering for classes has forever changed at Appalachian State University. The days of printed schedules and post office box announcements are over, and a newly enhanced AppalNET registration and information service has begun.
   On account of the budget crisis and the university’s desire to remove all printed materials from its waste stream, AppalNET has been enhanced to handle all student services in a timely and comprehensive manner, Registrar and Director of Student Information Systems Don R. Rankins said Friday.
Results show SGA ‘out of touch’

   Most students do not know their Student Government Association representatives and say SGA is doing a poor to average job of representing their needs, according to a student opinion questionnaire conducted by The Appalachian.
   The questionaire asked 91 randomly chosen students if they knew who their SGA representatives were and also asked them to rate their knowledge and opinion of SGA on a scale of one to five.
ASU student stabbed, suspect in custody

   One suspect is in custody, while another is still being pursued, on felony assault charges following the March 4 stabbing of a 21-year-old Appalachian State University student.
   The lead investigator in the case, Capt. William Greene of the Town of Boone Police Department, declined further comment following three separate press releases from the department.
   Julius Laure Pickett, 21, became involved in an altercation with a pedestrian while driving on Charlotte Ann Lane in Boone. What began as an argument resulted in Pickett being stabbed in the neck, investigators with the Town of Boone Police Department said.
Local groups hold clothing drive for area sexual assault victims

   Victims of domestic and sexual assault who decide to go to the hospital after being assaulted are not allowed to keep the clothes they were wearing when the assault happened, according to O.A.S.I.S., a non-profit service organization devoted to helping victims of abuse.
