Wrestling wins sixth SoCon title Allie Woods

    With five individual champions and Paul Mance named as Southern Conference (SoCon) coach of the year, Appalachian State University claimed its sixth Southern Conference championship.
    With an escape late in the match, Rich Caisse outlasted The Citadel’s Ryan McClester 1-0 to take the title at 125 pounds.
    Top-seeded at 133 pounds, Travis Drake claimed the second individual title for the Mountaineers and his second consecutive SoCon title with a 10-7 decision over The Citadel’s Sean Markey.
    Appalachian’s Jason Jones had his chances but could not convert as University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Jacob Harris outlasted Jones 5-4 in overtime to take the 149 pound championship.
    Appalachian would capture two consecutive titles as Lee Roper and Mark Fee each won their respective classes at 165 and 174 pounds. Roper downed Virginia Military Institute’s Michael Parsons 5-1. Mark Fee also defeated his Keydet opponent and last year’s 174-pound champion, Matt Erwin 4-0.
    The Citadel’s Keith Clifton took the 184 pound title as he defeated Mountaineer Sean McIntosh 7-3.
    The final title of the evening for Appalachian came at 197 pound as Josh Carroll forced The Citadel’s Jordan Everett to the mat midway through the overtime period to cap off a successful evening for ASU in dramatic fashion, 3-1.
    Mance earned Southern Conference coach-of-the year honors while leading the Mountaineers to an 11-2 record along with a regular season and Southern Conference Tournament Championship.
