Before the game started,
Georgia Southern Universitys Shawnica Hill was honored for
being selected to the All-Conference first team.
Then she went out onto the court and showed why she was honored.
Hill scored 22 points, collected nine rebounds
and keyed a Georgia Southern comeback as the third-seeded Lady Eagles
stormed back to defeat the sixth-seeded Mountaineers 82-71 in overtime
in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference womens tournament
March 6.
The Mountaineers easily controlled the first half
of the game and led 36-27 at halftime. The team used an up-tempo
attack that consisted of fast breaks, outlet passes and a full court
press. The full court pressure forced Georgia Southern into some
crucial turnovers throughout the half.

The University of Tennessee
at Chattanooga missed only 18 shots in their massacre over Appalachian
State University at tahe Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston,
S.C.
UTC (20-8,) shot an astonishing 72 percent from
the field for the game compared to Appalachians sub-par 41
percent, securing the victory over the Mountaineers (19-10) 98-67.
The nations No. 2 scoring offense was no
threat to put the ball in the net as the Mocs could have taught
a shooting clinic with their offensive performance.
I think we did a great job on [Graham] Bunn
and we did a great job guarding [Shawn] Hall, Chattanooga
head coach Jeff Lebo said. [Hall] couldnt really get
anything going tonight, and I think its because we played
some tough defense.

Despite not getting off a shot in the first two minutes and playing
a style of game not typical to Appalachian State University wins,
the Mountaineers pulled out a first round victory over The Citadel
during the Southern Conference Tournament.
The Mountaineers finished the regular season in
the top five in the nation in scoring with Shawn Hall averaging
over 20 points a game. Despite this, ASU could only manage 27 points
in the first half, and Hall was held to only three points.

It is
the morning of Jan. 28 and the Appalachian State University mens
basketball team holds its head high because it is sitting at the
top of the conference with a 13-4 record and is just coming off
a home win over conference rival Furman University.
With no ability to foresee the outcome of the
next 12 games, most fans, including myself, were beginning to think
about a NCAA bid or a NIT bid and a conference title coming back
to Boone.
