Editor’s note: The following corrects wrong information presented in March 4 Our Perspective “SGA bickering hurts student body, interest.” The Appalachian apologizes for this mistake.
As a friend and colleague of Jeni Gray’s, I must bring to your attention some misinformation printed March 4. As you have probably already been made aware, Daniel Lee no longer “sits on death row” as he died quite some time ago in Central Prison in Raleigh of a brain aneurysm. While we can never know for certain, it was suspected and presented as a defense that this condition likely contributed to his aberrant behavior that resulted in his horrific actions.
This may or may not impact how one feels about the death penalty, but certainly points out the need to research and verify information posted on fliers by those opposed to the moratorium vote. If his condition were considered, it is unlikely that he would have been their strongest poster prisoner for utilizing the death penalty to avenge a murder.
I do know that the one thing I remember most vividly throughout this terrible ordeal was Jeni’s father somehow managed to speak out with calm and talked of forgiveness. I couldn’t comprehend this stance at that point in time and still struggle internally with the issue, but it certainly did make an impression.

TV has become a waste of time Amber Opheim

To The Editor:
This is a response to a March 4 column, “Have reality television shows gone too far?”
Instead of bashing reality TV alone, how about reprimanding TV in general for the waste of time it has become? Television is nothing more than a series of advertisements in one disguise or another, designed to sell you products you’re convinced you want or need. It is not there to entertain you and certainly doesn’t exist to stimulate your intellect.
Honestly the only show I can stomach these days is “The Simpsons,” the writing staff of which is headed by Harvard graduates. But even the subtle satire of that show often sells out to pop culture, deserting its original individualism.
Can anyone say they actually feel good when they finally turn off the television? Just like eating a doughnut, you’re never proud of yourself after finishing. When is the last time anyone said and meant, “Wow, I’m glad I watched that program, I sure do feel enriched, and it was absolultely worth my time to watch that instead of reading, studying, or being with my friends.”
The news is muddled with opinions of newscasters talking in circles in order to avoid admitting that they hardly have more facts than we do.
The once glorified MTV has turned to a series of mindless programs designed to promote sexuality and plastic personalities. And fact based networks such as History and TLC now offer exaggerated exhibitions of gore in order to satisfy your morbid curiosity, all the while selling you household products, rare U.S. coins, and great CD collections not found in stores! You’re only young once, turn off the TV and start to live!

President Bush needs support Melissa Nolte

To The Editor:
I love going to Appalachian State, but it seems like all you ever hear about is the liberal opinion on the war on terrorism. Well I am a hard-core conservative and stand behind our President 100 percent. March 7, President Bush was asked if the U.S. was going to wait to take action against Iraq until the UN gives us authorization. His response was, “...when it comes to our security, we really don’t need anybody’s permission.” I think it is important to remember that President Bush is our elected leader and Commander-in-Chief. He deserves respect, and here on campus, I see people bashing him everywhere I turn. Everyone seems to have the misconception that he is trying to create a war and this is not true. Bush has stated and restated that physical means is to be used as a last measure; diplomacy is always first. I just think everyone needs to re-examine their thoughts and try to give a little more respect to our President.
