The Appalachian Popular Programming Society (A.P.P.S.) brings Jump Little Children, Carbon Leaf and Tinker’s Punishment to Legends tonight.
“Tinker’s Punishment opened for Jump Little Children last semester in October, and it’s kind of a bonus that Carbon Leaf is coming,” A.P.P.S. Stage Show Chairperson Peter D. Van Schoick said Monday.
It was Jump Little Children’s decision to have both bands opening for them, but A.P.P.S. is pleased with it, Van Schoick said.
All these bands draw a similar crowd, yet are different in the music influences they combine in their music, Van Schoick said.
Jump Little Children has an acoustic folk rock style, with a firm base in rock n’ roll.
Tinker’s Punishment does not really have a following of its own, but is more like Jump in their style of music, with more rock n’ roll influences, Van Schoick said.
Jump and Carbon Leaf are similar because both bands’ first influences were Celtic.
Carbon Leaf is more edgy, Van Schoick said.
They define their sound as “Ether-Electrified Porch Music,” merging many influences together such as Celtic, bluegrass, rock and pop, according to information provided by Big Hassle Media.
Originally from Richmond, Va., Carbon Leaf has been working its way up, cultivating a big following in Virginia.
“Carbon Leaf is trying to garner support in other areas besides Virginia with their East Coast tour,” Van Schoick said.
Carbon Leaf includes Barry Privet on vocals, penny whistle, bagpipes, banjo and harmonica; Carter Gravatt on vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, bodhran and bouzuki; Terry Clark on vocals and acoustic and electric guitar; Jordan Medas on vocals and electric and double bass; and Scott Milstead on drums and percussion, according to Big Hassle Media.
Carbon Leaf is planning to release a live album in April following their latest full-length album, “ECHO-ECHO,” released in 2001.“In general, Jump and Carbon Leaf is a combination that probably will not happen again,” Van Schoick said.
Jump is just a good band and Carbon Leaf is a growing, upcoming band, Van Schoick said.
Tinker’s Punishment will start the night, followed by Carbon Leaf. Jump will wrap up the performance, playing up to curfew, Van Schoick said.
Tickets will be $5 in advance on sale at the W.H. Plemmons Student Union information desk and $7 at the door. This event is BYOB with a six-pack limit with proper I.D. Doors open at 9 p.m.
