Despite
being one of only two club teams swimming in a meet at Radford University,
the Appalachian State University club swimming team finished seventh
place out of 13, ahead of six varsity teams and just barely behind
another. Teams from around the country participated in the swim
meet, with Georgia Institute of Technology fielding the only other
club team.
Perhaps the most well known school, University of Notre Dame, eked
out sixth place over Appalachian by a mere four points.
The meet, held Feb. 21-23, was the first of the spring semester
and was solely for the women on the team.
Appalachian only sent 10 swimmers to the meet, with three others
not making the trip due to the flu.
Five different events were held each morning, and the top 16 swimmers
for each event swam in the finals Sunday. Appalachians strongest
finish was by Ashley Hawks, who placed fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Joining Hawks with top finishes were Mary Brosenne, Karen Byrd and
Kimberly Byrd.
Brosenne finished ninth place in the 100-meter backstroke and fifth
place in the 200-meter backstroke.
Karen and Kimberly Byrd both swam in the 1,650-meter freestyle and
finished seventh and ninth respectively.
I was very happy with where we finished, Karen Byrd
said. Considering that the other teams had double or triple
the amount of people we had, we did very well. We are also just
a club sport, and they are all on varsity level, which means they
train a lot harder.
The teams next meet is currently slated for April 5, although
there is a possibility of another after spring break. |
