ASU takes last playoff spot, defeating Clemson Brad Norman
Sports Beat
The Appalachian State University club hockey team, winless during the entire fall semester, needed to at least tie Clemson University once and beat them once during their doubleheader last weekend.
They did that and then some.
Appalachian stunned Clemson, defeating them 9-7 last Saturday and 6-4 Sunday.
ASU trailed by three goals early in the first period Saturday, but received a huge offensive boost that enabled them to score nine goals.
The defense, despite giving up three early goals, clamped down just enough to preserve the win.
The early deficit was due to erroneous penalties and mental mistakes.
B.J. Radhe and Andy Bullin both came through with shorthanded goals in the first period to keep the game close before ASU finally pulled away.
The team’s defense and goalie Brett Dabb had a sensational effort the next day, holding Clemson to only four goals.
The two wins allowed Appalachian to clinch the final playoff spot, the first time the team has made the playoffs in three years.
The tournament will be played this weekend in Chesapeake, Va.
Appalachian’s first game is Friday against Radford University.
The game is a match up pitting two teams going in different directions.
Appalachian has been riding an incredible hot streak this semester, a streak begun by a victory against Radford in early January. At the time, Radford was the No. 1 team in the conference.
Since that loss, Radford has tumbled to third place.
If Appalachian wins, they will move on to meet top seed Hampton Roads the next night. If they lose, they will play in the consolation game against the loser of the North Carolina State University-University of Richmond game.
Should Appalachian beat Radford and Hampton Roads, they will play Sunday in the championship game.
