ASU sweeps indoor championship Allie Woods

    Appalachian State University continued its quest for the triple-crown as the Mountaineers won the 2003 Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.
    The victory gave ASU a conference record 13 men’s and 10 women’s indoor team titles.
    Daniel Duckworth started things off for the Mountaineers with a winning weight throw of 58 feet, 1.25 inches.
    ASU took the top two spots in the 55-meter dash. Jason Green picked up the victory with a time of 6.26 seconds. Not far behind was Earnest Wiggins, who finished second. Green and Wiggins also finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
    Head coach John Weaver was named the men’s indoor Coach of the Year. Appalachian’s Holt McPherson and Anthony Greer were selected the Men’s Indoor Field Performers of the Year.
    For the women’s team, Ronda White set a conference record in the 55-meter hurdles, turning in another NCAA provisional mark time of 7.86 seconds.
    Mountaineer Katie Sujkowski won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:19.45, and Sarah Primeau won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:43.56.
    ASU women dominated the field events when LaShana Poole, who was selected the women’s Field Performer of the Year, won the weight throw with a mark of 57 feet, 2 inches.
    The Mountaineers swept the triple jump. Ronda White won her second event of the day by hitting an NCAA provisional mark of 41 feet, 4.5 inches.
    Tondra White and Jennifer Claud finished second and third to complete the sweep.
