In an attempt to solidify their position as a top club team in the state, the Appalachian State University men’s club soccer team has joined forces with other local colleges to form a club soccer league.
The league games will start this weekend, and every team will play eight games, despite having 11 teams.
Other than ASU, the new league members are East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, two teams from North Carolina State University, two teams from Wake Forest University, Duke University, Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After the season is over, the winning percentages for each team will be used to rank the teams for the conference tournament. This year’s tournament will be played in March at East Carolina.
With the graduation of Terry Rafferty, Andy Morris will supervise the team as president.
“Obviously everyone wants to win so we’re really excited about this new league,” Morris said.
“Although the weather hasn’t been too kind to us, we’re looking forward to starting the season. We can play, and we have a good team.”
The new league has given the team a new goal-oriented focus of winning.
“This league really gives us something to shoot for,” team vice president Lee Spruill said.
The team played games during the fall semester, but they did not have as much meaning as a league game would, Spruill said.
With this new focus comes new methods of training.
The team not only practices twice a week but incorporates lots of conditioning drills into their practices.
For the team to succeed in conference play, the exceptionally strong midfielders will need to play to their potential.
“Our midfielders are just loaded, but we’re not a one-dimensional team,” Spruill said.
“We also have a really strong defense and just a strong team all around.”
The team commences its games for the spring semester this Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
