   The Appalachian State University Police responded to a breaking and entering call at Welborn Cafeteria Monday, apprehending one suspect while another managed to flee the scene.  
SGA presidential election on horizon

   The deadline is fast approaching for the Student Government Association (SGA) presidential and vice presidential nominations.
   Nominations are due tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the SGA office. Nominees for either of the positions must have a 2.25 GPA and 65 hours of credit by the end of this semester. No previous SGA experience is required to run for either office. Elections start March 17.

Participants in last year’s Polar Plunge dive into ice-cold water in front of a record crowd due to filming of MTV’s “Road Rules,” Campus Crawl.
    The “Polar Plunge,” sponsored in part by the University Police, is set to take place today. The event, which features people jumping into the ice-cold waters of the duck pond in February, is a fundraiser to benefit the Special Olympics of Watauga County.
   “We’ve had the event five years, and this will be my fourth year jumping,” University Police Chief Gunther E. Doerr said. “It doesn’t really matter what the weather is; the water is always cold.”
Film series gears up for Women’s History Month

Dr. Sandie Gravett, associate professor in the department of philosophy and religion, helped form the Women’s Reality Film Series.
    March is Women’s History Month, and the Women’s Studies Program at Appalachian State University will be celebrating that history with the Women’s Reality Film Series.
   The series takes place every Monday starting Feb. 24 and will continue throughout March, excluding Spring Break.
    Dr. Sandie Gravett, associate professor in the department of philosophy and religion, was formerly the director of the Women’s Studies program and a part of the committee that decided to do a film series for women’s history.
Wells: Students who study abroad take risks

   Most students who are interested in studying abroad are risk takers, said Assistant Program Director of the International Student Exchange and Study Abroad Program Nancy W. Wells.
   “You have to be able to deal with a high level of uncertainty,” Wells said.
   Uncertainty is just one worry among many that students must cope with when studying abroad. However, most students usually have a motivation that helps them overcome their fears.
