Aisha Bryant (25) and the Mountaineers defeated Davidson 63-53 in the George M. Holmes Convocation Center Tuesday.
After a five-minute standstill with the score tied 5-5 it appeared that neither Appalachian State or Davidson College had brought an offensive assault with them Tuesday night.
Finally mid way through the first half the lady Mountaineers went on a 22-4 run to give them a commanding lead over the Wildcats, then eventually pulling out the victory 63-53.
What started slow turned into a rush of offense and momentum for Appalachian behind the games leading scorer freshman Kiki Conyers. Conyers was a perfect 6-of-6 in the first frame and ended the game with 18 points.
“Those first shots felt good and we have worked on those everyday in practice, just trying to get in and shoot over the top,” Conyers said.
“[Conyers] did a tremendous job, I think that is the best part of her game,” said head coach Adrienne Shuler. “She did a tremendous job of getting past the first defender and pulling up over the second defender.”
Sophomore Lindsay Smith had a break out game for the Mountaineers as she went 4-of-7 from behind the three-point arc, netting 14 points.
“It felt good to come out and produce tonight after struggling [against ETSU],” Smith said.
Once in the lead Appalachian held control and momentum for the better part of the game. Late in the second half the Wildcats implanted a full-court press that confused and frustrated the Mountaineers at first.
Davidson pulled a 21-point Appalachian lead down to nine with this pressure but that was as close as they would get, as the Mountaineers eventually won by 10.
Leading the Wildcats was junior guard Ashley Hallstead with 12 points and senior forward Bethany Schott netted nine and pulled 10 rebounds, almost accruing a double-double.
“We got too into trying to run the clock down and stopped worrying about shooting,” Smith said. “They were able to hit some shots and get back into the game, but we picked it back and realized that we needed to score and play defense.”
“Our game plan going in was to play behind them, but we couldn’t give them that deep of position,” Shuler said.
“We did a good job of forcing them off the blocks and making them shoot over the top, then controlling the boards.”
The victory put Appalachian at 8-14 overall and 7-6 in the Southern Conference. Davidson is now 10-12 overall and fell to 5-8 in the conference.
Don your black and gold Tues. Feb. 18 as the Appalachian Lady Mountaineer’s face Wofford College in Boone at 7 p.m
