Acoustic Syndicate is returning to Boone once again.
The band, brought here by the Appalachian Popular Programming Society (A.P.P.S.), will perform in Legends tonight at 9 p.m.
“They are one of Boone’s favorite bands,” Peter D. Van Schoick, A.P.P.S.’s stage show chairperson, said Monday.
“A.P.P.S. brought them here last semester and sold it out,” Van Schoick said.
There is a very high demand for Acoustic Syndicate, and past shows have been generally well attended, Schoick said.
Acoustic Syndicate’s roots are strongest in bluegrass, but they play with a drummer, which is uncommon in bluegrass.
Acoustic Syndicate members include Fitz McMurry on drums, Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry on the guitar and mandolin, Bryon McMurry on the banjo, Jay Sanders on the bass guitar and the band’s “official/unofficial” fifth member Jeremy Saunders on the saxophone, according to the Jambase Web site.
Bryon McMurry, Fitz McMurry and their cousin, Steve, grew up together in Cleveland County. They have played music together since they were kids.
The McMurrys were a musical family, and it all started one Christmas when they all got instruments as gifts.
Their fourth member and friend, Sanders, grew up in Nashville, Tenn., and had been living in the Appalachian Mountains since 1993, according to the band’s Web site.
They met Sanders, a founding member of Snake Oil Medicine Show, at a Snake Oil concert. When Acoustic Syndicate’s original bass player left they hired Sanders, according to the band’s Web site.
The band’s strongest touring areas are North and South Carolina and southern Virginia, but they do tour out west as well, according to the Jambase Web site.
The band has many connections in North Carolina and Boone, where they have been playing for years, Van Schoick said.
In the last two months the band released a new album called “Live from the Neighborhood. The new album is composed of different live tracks from different shows.
“Their live show is extremely dynamic. They put on an excellent live show, so capturing the live show on a CD is just a good idea,” Van Schoick said.
“Acoustic Syndicate is one of the best live acts coming to Legends,” Van Schoick said. “Do not miss this show.”
The show will consist of only Acoustic Syndicate and no opening act. It will be two long sets lasting until curfew, Van Schoick said.
Tickets are $9 in advance and $11 at the door. They are available at the information desk in W. H. Plemmons Student Union.
