The Mountaineer wrestlers
remained unbeaten at 6-0 after squeaking out a victory 23-17 over
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
At 125 pounds, senior Richard Caisse fell 3-1 after being taken
down in overtime. Travis Drake got Appalachian State University
on track with a 9-5 decision at 133 pounds.
Eric Burns was able to score a pin, contributing six points to the
Mountaineer effort.
Also wrestling well and winning big matches were Mark Fee, who scored
a major decision, and David Hazel, who won the final match of the
day, giving ASU the victory.
Hazel was faced with the prospect of being the hero or goat for
Appalachian.
If he won, the team won, and if he lost, the team lost. Hazel trailed
6-5 going into the final period, but with 30 seconds remaining he
took Hokie wrestler, Pete Pool, down to his back to pick up two
points for the near fall. He made the lead stick and picked up the
victory, 9-6.
