   The Appalachian State University men’s basketball team adapted to the slow tempo game plan of The Citadel Saturday to remain unbeaten in the George M. Holmes Convocation Center.
    The Mountaineers, ranked second in the nation in scoring offense before Saturday’s match-up, took a beating by the Bulldogs’ zone defense but held out to win 75-65.
    Appalachian moves to a 7-1 record in the Southern Conference while The Citadel falls to a 2-6 conference record.

Georgia Southern University defeated the Mountaineers on Saturday with a final score of 77-65. The Eagles had 30 trips to the foul shot line, while ASU had only four. The Mountaineers travel to Greensboro Feb. 3 to play against Furman.
   Georgia Southern University’s Jessica Everett scored six straight points to start the game, and the Lady Eagles never relinquished their lead as they downed the Mountaineers 77-65 Saturday.
   Appalachian rallied in the first half to tie the score at 12, but they would not come any closer or claim a lead for the rest of the game.
   Everett gave the Mountaineers trouble all day, as she finished with 19 points on 80 percent shooting and nine rebounds.
   Everett, Shawnica Hill, Tiffany Lanier and Rachel Loiacono combined to score 59 of the Eagles’ 77 points.
Wrestling unbeaten, 23-17 Allie Woods

   The Mountaineer wrestlers remained unbeaten at 6-0 after squeaking out a victory 23-17 over Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
    At 125 pounds, senior Richard Caisse fell 3-1 after being taken down in overtime. Travis Drake got Appalachian State University on track with a 9-5 decision at 133 pounds.
    Eric Burns was able to score a pin, contributing six points to the Mountaineer effort.
    Also wrestling well and winning big matches were Mark Fee, who scored a major decision, and David Hazel, who won the final match of the day, giving ASU the victory.
    Hazel was faced with the prospect of being the hero or goat for Appalachian.
    If he won, the team won, and if he lost, the team lost. Hazel trailed 6-5 going into the final period, but with 30 seconds remaining he took Hokie wrestler, Pete Pool, down to his back to pick up two points for the near fall. He made the lead stick and picked up the victory, 9-6.
Kent State beats ASU, 3-0 Allie Woods

   Kent State University went 3-0 in the round robin tournament held at James Madison University and handed the Appalachian State University grapplers their first loss of the season.The Mountaineers went 2-1, picking up victories over JMU and Campbell University.
    A trio of wrestlers went 3-0 on the day to contribute to the team effort.Seniors Travis Drake and Rich Caisse registered three victories. Caisse wrestled his way to a tech fall in one of his matches and pushed his record to 25-7 on the season.Drake recorded a major decision along with one pin to move his record to 25-7 on the season also.
    Sophomore Jason Jones had a good day at 141 pounds, where he put up a tech fall and two decisions.
    The Mountaineers return to action on Feb. 7 when they will travel to take on Virginia Military Institute.
