Appalachian club hockey stuns top ranked Radford in 6-3 upset Brad Norman
Sports Beat
Appalachian State University sports have seen a fair share of dramatic games this season, but perhaps the biggest upset out of any of them didn’t take place at Kidd Brewer Stadium or the George M. Holmes Convocation Center. It took place on a much smaller scale—in a rink located in Radford, Va.
This upset happened last Saturday and involved the Appalachian Club Hockey Team, which marched into Radford University’s rink and defeated the No. 1 team in the conference by a score of 6-3.
The loss avenges an 11-2 pounding that Radford handed the team earlier in the season.
The Mountaineers vowed to have hard wind-sprints over the break as third period fatigue plagued them during the first half of the season.
“It was all that time on the pond,” goalie Brett Dabb said after the game.
Appalachian was anchored by a strong No. 1 line and a superb goaltending performance by Dabb.
The game was the first of the new semester and also the first game without longtime player Davy Nemetz, who graduated in December. Without Nemetz, wings Bobby Hathaway and Andy Bullin delivered strong performances.
The win was important not only for morale but also in the standings. Appalachian is currently last in the conference, but is closing in on both Clemson University and University of Richmond. The team hopes to prolong the winning streak on Feb. 7 when they play North Carolina State University. A win would help chances for a higher seeding in the conference tournament, which starts on Feb. 28.
