After enjoying a 13-5-1 record during the 2002 season, the Appalachian State University men’s soccer team is still receiving awards.
The Mountaineers had five players, Greg Brooks, Mark Thornton, Keon McPherson, Jannis Riesz and Steve Mellor honored as All-Conference players. Recently the team has had three of these players honored again.
The College Soccer News named freshman midfielder Steve Mellor to the men’s All-Freshman third team. “I was pretty excited when I found out; it’s a good honor,” said Mellor, who found out about his selection from a friend who was looking online.
Mellor racked up five goals and five assists during his inaugural season at ASU and as well was named SoCon player of the week for the week of Oct. 14.
Sophomore forward Keon McPherson and junior midfielder Mark Thornton were both named to the 2002 All-South squad by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
McPherson, who also netted five goals and five assists, was a second team selection in his first season as a Mountaineer after transferring from Roberts Wesleyan University. Thornton was named an All-South third team performer as well as being honored as last season’s MVP.
All the honors and accolades will give the Mountaineers high expectations for next season.
“We want to try and win the conference,” Mellor said. “We got close coming in second this year but had an unfortunate loss in the playoffs.”
