ASU head coach Adrienne Shuler coached her team to a victory over the College of Charleston after being down eight points during the game. Saturday the women’s basketball team will take on Davidson College.
After jumping out to a quick lead at the beginning of the game and up by six at halftime, the Appalachian State University women’s basketball team found themselves down by eight points to visiting College of Charleston with 9:37 left on the clock.
With the momentum and possession of the ball in favor of the Cougars, things were beginning to look grim for the Mountaineers, who all but gave the game away to this point.
But this Mountaineer team was not ready to quit.
he Mountaineers proceeded to force and capitalize on Charleston turnovers and fouls, leading to a 30 to 11 run in the final minutes of the game to seize the victory over the Cougars, 82-69.
“[Our girls] did a great job; they could have easily folded when we got down eight, nine points,” said head coach Adrienne Shuler. “And you would have seen that earlier in the year, but just to see how much they have grown individually makes me proud.”

Special to the Appalachian

At the two day race at Sugar Mountain, it was obvious that both the men’s and women’s club skiing teams have greatly improved from last season. Both teams overall placed in the top three on both days.

In the first race of the season, the Appalachian State University Club Ski Team had a dominant performance that put them in position to dramatically improve last year’s overall record. The women’s A-Team, which finished in eighth place out of 12 teams last year, placed second overall Saturday and first overall Sunday. The men’s A-Team also improved from fifth last year as they placed first Saturday and third Sunday.
The race, held at Sugar Mountain, involved 11 other teams from North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. The top teams Appalachian faced were Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Western Carolina University, University of Virginia and rival Lees-McRae College. The race was conducted over two days, consisting of the Slalom and the Giant Slalom. The Slalom course, raced Saturday, Jan. 11 and the Giant Slalom followed Sunday, Jan. 12. Both events are run on the same course with the key difference being how far apart the gates and flags are.
