Thompson on target with cigarette butt
collumn

To the Editor

Props to Crystal Thompson for her column concerning the issue of cigarette butts littered ... everywhere. I, myself, have been meaning to broach this very subject for some time. Let me just add my boos and hisses to those smokers, kids, (otherwise known as students) faculty and staff (otherwise known as those that should know better) who think it expedient to toss their trash where they feel it is most convenient for them. That is, in the flowerbeds, on the sidewalks or patios of the campus and so on. But let me add some culprits to the list of evildoers. Not only do we find an abundance of butts, we find an abundance of soda cans, chip bags, and other trash items that lazy, irresponsible individuals don’t have the wherewithal to put into the proper receptacles. Those receptacles are called “trash cans” to the uninitiated. Allow me to inform you that mommy is not here to clean up for you!

Doerr thanks community for recent support

To the Editor:

On behalf of the ASU Police, Boone Police and Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to thank all the people who participated in this year’s Polar Plunge fundraiser for Watauga County Special Olympics.
The “Plunge” was a huge success; we had 317 people take the plunge, which more than doubled last year’s 137 plungers. Even more exciting is the fact we raised over $14,000 for Watauga County Special Olympics, more than twice the amount raised last year.
[The departments] would especially like to recognize and thank the following organizations who helped make this year’s “Plunge” a success by raising money: ASU Army ROTC & Commando Club —$1,400 and ASU Wrestling Team —$1,000
Other clubs and organizations that contributed were: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Tau Omega, Blimpie’s, ASU Student Ambassadors, Boone Police Explorers, Chi Omega, Civil Air Patrol, Delta Zeta, Doughton RSA, East Hall RSA, ASU Field Hockey, Frank RSA, Mr. Original’s Gyros, Newland CRSA, Pain Management Clinic, MTN, Phi Mu, Pi Kappa Alpha, RHA Health Services, Sigma Kappa, Sig Ep and Watauga Special Olympics.
