Check sources other than CNN

To the Editor:
This is a response to Sean Oakley’s article, “‘Sleeping Giant’ Must Declare War on Terrorism.”
Perhaps a complete rehashing of CNN commentaries as justification for the “War on Terrorism” that CNN and other mainstream media networks have been quick to whole-heartedly support is not the best nor the bravest route to take when given the chance to get a message out to the student body. It’s a waste of paper and people’s time. If we need to find out what CNN has to say about the matter, we can turn on the TV.
However, there are other media sources reporting differing opinions.
We owe it to ourselves, to our country and to the world to learn as much as we can about this situation before we continue this cycle of violence. The websites www.zmag.org, www.wbix.org, www.forusa.org, www.warresisters.org, and www.peace-action.org all contain information that we all should know.
And for possible reasons why Iraq may not think America is all that great, check out www.vitw.org. I do not ask that you agree with anything on any of these sites, I just ask that you read them in earnest. CNN will not give you the facts you need to know.

Rental system is a money saver

To the Editor:
In the Aug. 28 issue of The Appalachian, there was an article entitled “Rental system under review” in which the dropping of the book-rental system was discussed.
The article included a paragraph in which senator Patricia Allen [of Faculty Senate] said that “a buy-back program would not cause students to spend that much more money,” referring to the fact that buying and selling back academic books would not cost more money than the rental system currently used by Appalachian State University.
I strongly disagree with this statement.
My first two years of college were spent at schools in Alabama. My freshman year alone, I spent about $550 on books per semester and when selling them back received approximately $150.
Therefore, in one year I spent about $1,100 and only received $300 of it when selling back my books. I lost $800 to books.
A similar situation happened my sophomore year. I was relieved when I came to this school and found that I only have to spend $60 per semester on books. As with a vast majority of college students, money is tight and saving $800 a year can determine if, when and where I can attend graduate school.

FLAI protest: why not sooner?

To the Editor:
As a graduate student having received my undergraduate degree from ASU, I hope you will afford me a moment not so much to address one of the insightful commentaries that can be found in your publication; rather, to address the demonstrators against US foreign policy that appeared on the mall this past Monday.
I support many things. Free Speech. The right to assemble. The right to bear arms. Practically, every ideal our founding fathers built this county around. I even support some of the views that FLAI holds to. However, the demonstration this past Monday only bespoke of one thing: opportunism.
First, why wait until now to protest? In my entire 5 years as a student, I have never seen your organization mobilize on campus to raise awareness to your cause. Yet, you wait until a gross human tragedy is committed so that you’ll be noticed.
