Testing Center available
Need
to take the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and/or PRAXIS-I this spring? Test
at your convenience at Appalachian's Computer-Based Testing (CBT)
Center. If you would like to schedule a time to test, please call
the CBT Center here on campus at 262-6801. Stop by the CBT Center
on the 2nd Floor of the ASU Post Office Building if you have questions
concerning specific tests or testing windows or visit our web site
at www.cbt.appstate.edu. Testing hours this spring are Monday-Friday,
8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.,and Monday and Wednesday evenings until 7:30
p.m. The CBT is open Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Counseling
Center offers groups
These
counseling and psychological Services Center groups are designed
to provide growthful experiences for both students who want to resolve
specific concerns and those who generally want to enhance the quality
of their interactions with others and feel better about themselves.
Groups meet weekly and are generally limited to 6-8 people. To arrange
to participate in a group or for more information, contact the Counseling
and Psychological Services Center at 262-3180. For more information

Leadership
101 underway
Leadership
101, a series of workshops designed to provide club and organization
members with the basics for making their organization more effective
and making workshop participants better leaders, continues in the
Linville Falls Room, Plemmons Student Union, from 5:30 until 6:30
p.m. Spring semester sessions are: Communication, March 6; Time
Management, March 27; Burnout, April 10. Students are welcome to
participate in the entire series, or just the workshops that are
of interest. Students who attend at least eight of the 12 workshops
will receive special recognition as a Leadership 101 graduate, and
will have their participation added to their Student Development
Record (co-curricular transcript), and will be awarded a certificate
of participation and invited to a graduation ceremony. For more

Appalachian's Writing Center here to help students
Hey
students, don't settle for less than excellence. Students everywhere
are putting pen to paper and tapping the keyboards. The University
Writing Center is here to help. We nourish confidence, competence,
and creativity. Our tutors aid writers through one-on-one discussions
in half hour or one hour sessions. The center is open from 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Plan ahead for that term paper and call 262-3144
to make an appointment.

Financial Aid applications now available
The
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for fall 2001 and
spring 2002 are now available in the Office of Student Financial
Aid. If you have not received a renewal FAFSA or Personal Identification
Number (PIN) at your permanent address, pick up the FAFSA in the
Office of Student Financial Aid in the John E. Thomas Building.
Complete and mail the FAFSA to the federal processing center or
complete the renewal FAFSA on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov as soon
as possible. The priority processing date for fall 2001 and spring
2002 is March 15.
R.A.D. classes scheduled
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Instruction will be held in three
different classes for the 2001 spring semester. The classes are:
Class 2, Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 28, and March 5 & 7, 6-9 p.m.,
the Yosef Room, owens Field House; Class 3, Wednesdays, March 21
& 28, and April 4 & 11, 7-10 p.m., Attic Window Room, Plemmons Student
Union. The classes will be cancelled if fewer than five sign up.
There is a $10 fee that includes a R.A.D. t-shirt, R.A.D. student
manual, and a free lifetime return and practice policy. For more

Cooperative
Education orientation sessions planned
Cooperative
Education is a planned learning process that integrates academic
study with work experience in a field related to your academic major.
You can put classroom theories into practice by spending two or
more academic terms doing paid work in a professional, career-related
position. Cooperative Education opportunities are available during
the spring, summer and fall terms. Students who want to participate
in Co-op are required to attend an orientation session. Orientation
sessions are planned for: Thursday, March 1, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.; Thursday,
March 22, 4-5 p.m.; Monday, April 9, 4-5 p.m. All sessions will
be held in the Cooperative Education Office, Room 100, I.G. Greer,
(phone: 262-4891).
Need extra help in biology and chemistry?
Supplemental Instruction is a program offered in cooperation between
the Learning Assistance Program and the Departments of Biology and
Chemistry. The program is voluntary so students may choose to attend
as often as they wish. Last semester, the average grade for students
who attended SI was a letter grade higher than the average grade
for students who did not. For more information on attending Supplemental

Spring 2001 Career Fairs are scheduled
The
Career Development Center announces the following career fairs scheduled
this spring: Tuesday, March 6, 1-4 p.m., Broyhill Inn, JobFest 2001;
Monday, March 26, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Broyhill Inn, Education Job
Fair; and Monday, April 23, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Grandfather Mountain

Center also announces the following special programs to help students
prepare for finding that all-important first job. The programs are:

Camp
Challenge social planned for sophomores
ASU
sophomores, who are looking for a good way to earn some money and
have fun this summer, have the opportunity to attend Camp Challenge
at Ft. Knox, KY. The camp is five weeks long and students can compete
for two-year ROTC scholarships. A social will be held on the 1st
floor of the D.D. Dougherty building on March 6, at 5 p.m. Refreshments
will be available. There is no obligation to enter the Army ROTC
program upon completion of Camp Challenge. Interested students contact

Nominations sought for Plemmons Medallion
The
W.H. Plemmons Leadership Medallion, named in honor of Dr. William
H. Plemmons, second president of Appalachian State University from
1955 to 1969, was established in 1996 by the board of trustees to
recognize the time, energy, skills, and commitment of students,
faculty, student development educators and staff who exceed their
peers in providing leadership that enriches the quality of student
life and advances the education of students. Nominations may be
made in the following categories: a student leader who has provided
distinguished leadership above that of other student leaders; a
student development educator within the Division of Student Development
for meritorious leadership in his or her work to enrich the quality
of student life and learning; a member of the faculty who has provided
meritorious leadership through his or her work with student clubs
or organizations, or work that enriches the quality of student life
and learning outside the classroom; a university employee upon showing
that he or she has provided meritorious leadership which has significantly
enriched the quality of student life and learning outside of the
classroom. Nomination forms may be obtained in the Center for Student
Involvement and Leadership, or from the Student Life Section of
the Appalachian Homepage. Nominations will be accepted until March
9. All nominations should be sent to the Center for Student Involvement

Study the Holocaust in Europe
Dr.
Rennie Brantz will lead a study abroad trip to France, Germany,
and Austria May 19-June 10, 2001. Participants will attend morning
classes on the Nazi Holocaust for the first week in Strasbourg's
Chateau de Pourtales, then travel to Paris, Munich, Salzburg in
Austria, Nuremberg, Heidelberg, and Rothenberg in order to experience
European culture as well as visit Nazi sites such as the Dachau
concentration camp, Nazi rally grounds outside Nuremberg, and Berchtesgaden's
Eagle's Nest. Students can earn six hours of European history credit.
Student financial aid may be used to finance the trip, which costs

Creative
writers compete for Capote scholarship
Competition
for Appalachian State University's 5th annual Truman Capote Literary
Trust Scholarship in Creative Writing is open to rising junior and
senior English majors. The scholarship supplies a full year's in-state
tuitition. Luis Rodriguez, author of the award-winning poetry collections
"The Concrete River," "Poems Across the Pavement,"
and "Trochemoche," and the memoir, "Always Running:
Gang Days in L.A.: La Vida Loca," is the final judge for the
competition. To apply, submit a file folder or envelope with three
copies each of either two short stories or pieces of creative fiction,
or five poems. Students may submit in both prose and poetry categories,
but must keep the applications separate. Prose should be typed and
double spaced. Poetry should be single spaced. Number pages and
staple them. Write your name, campus address, and telephone number
on the first page of each manuscript submitted. The deadline for
entry is Thursday, March 8, at noon. Entries should be delivered
to the English Department, 2nd floor, Sanford Hall. The winner will
be anounced during the April 26 reading by Abigail DeWitt. Results
will be posted on the Creative Writing and English Department bulletin
boards. Qualifications are that the winner must pursue an English
major with a concentration in creative writing. The winner must
plan to be enrolled for the entire 2001-2002 academic year to receive

Hollywood
classic ŒPinocchio' to be shown March 1
Appalachian
State University's Hollywood Classics Film Series will show Walt
Disney's feature-length animated classic "Pinocchio" (1940)
on Thursday, March 1, at 8 p.m. in the I.G. Greer Theater. Admission
is free and the public is welcome.

Arts,
literary magazine needs submissions
"The Summit," Appalachian's new arts magazine, seeks submissions
by students in the following categories: short stories, poems, photographs,
paintings, essays, non-fiction, drawings, and "art." There
are no limits on the number of submissions, but all submissions
must be submitted by Feb. 28. Please submit duplicates of all written
submissions (one with your name, address, phone number, email address)
and one without. All paintings and drawings must be submitted in
photograph form. Drop your submissions by the Center for Student
Involvement and Leadership, Room 219D, Plemmons Student Union. For

Counseling, family therapy services available at ASU
Individual,
couples, family and child therapy is provided on the campus of ASU
at the Marriage and Family Clinic in the Department of Human Development
and Psychological Counseling. Therapists in the Marriage and Family
Clinic are advanced graduate students specializing in marital and
family therapy. Therapy is closely supervised by the faculty of
the Marriage and Family Therapy Program. Services are provided free
of charge to ASU students. For others, a sliding fee scale is available.

Coalition seeks good deed doing people!
Have you noticed someone doing good deeds lately for the community?
The ASU Service Coalition (co-sponsored by SGA and ACT) would like
to spotlight volunteer activities on a monthly basis ... and we
need your help to do it! Nominations can include, but are not limited
to the following: 1) a student who has made a commitment to a non-profit
organization, 2) a student club/organization who has made a tremendous
difference at a non-profit agency, 3) a faculty member who has had
the initiative and creativity to incorporate service as a teaching
tool in his/her syllabus, and 4) a community agency that has made
extra efforts to educate ASU students about the issues they work
with daily. Four awards will be given montly. Deadline for February

Organizational
development seminar set
"Image,
Attitude and Professionalism," a seminar for organizational
and professional development, presented by Bob McHone, will be held
Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the McRae Peak/Attic Window Rooms, Plemmons
Student Union, from 4 until 5:30 p.m. The seminar is sponsored by
the Career Development Center and Wachovia Corporation. McHone is
a professional development consultant who has presented seminars
on the keys to achieving succsss by developing one's image, attitude
and professionalism before a variety of corporate organizations.

Center seeks women for arts retreat
The ASU Women's Center is looking for several female students to
atend an expressive arts retreat in Valle Crucis the evening of
March 23 and the morning of March 24. The retreat will be facilitated
by Terri Chester and will involve a variety of activities to teach
female spirituality through art and other forms of expression. The
retreat is free. Pick up a form at The Women's Center in Plemmons
Student Union and return it by March 8. This "Common Ground"
retreat is sponsored by The ASU Women's Center.

The
ASU Women's Center is collecting old magazines for expressive art
work. Please drop off any magazines, expecially National Geographic
and others, at The Women's Center in Plemmons Student Union before
spring break.
Library
offers chance to honor Earnhardt
Stock
car racing fans who would like to pay tribute to Dale Earnhardt
can donate funds toward new books for the ASU Library stock car
racing collection. The books will contain a gift plate saying "Donated
by (name of donor) in memory of Dale Earnhardt." Gifts of any
amount are welcomed. Make checks payable to "Friends of the
Library," and mail them to Suzanne Wise, Belk Library. For
