WASU "trashes" format for summer

Kara Hodge - Senior Staff Writer

If you have been listening to WASU 90.5 ÒThe AppÓ this summer you may have noticed a few changes in the format of their programming.

ÒYour only alternativeÓ as dubbed by the station has changed into a variety of new music, shows and DJs.

Due to lack of audience size and the small amount of trained DJs available this summer, WASU has allowed a few new faces to step up to the mike and run the station.

Patrick Sills, the station manager for the 2001 Ð 02 academic year named Senior Chris Higginbotham as station manager for the summer. Junior Laura Brady is the Music Director.

ÒTo encourage participation in the station, people can come in and learn how to run a show,Ó said Brady, ÒEspecially since there isnÕt a DJ class this summer.Ó

The class Brady is talking about is taught by the station manager and instructs those who are interested in how to be a disc jockey.

The classÕ duration is for one academic semester and is offered in both the fall and spring. After completion of the class, students are allowed to run a DJ slot, playing a mix of the top 30 college alternative hits.

The Hip-Hop/R&B specialty show is trying something different than just playing songs. Last Thursday, DJs Tiffany Fant ÒAfroditeÓ, Anthony White ÒAs PromisedÓ and Thaddeus Skeen ÒThe SolutionÓ invited the audience to come into the station and participate in the selection of the songs.

ÒWe want to give Appalachian a whole other flavor, since the station plays a lot of alternativeÓ said Fant, ÒMike and WillieÕs is shutting down, and weÕd like to have that party feel to our show, so we had people come in and dance.Ó

The Hip-Hop show runs from midnight to 2 a.m. every Thursday.

Specialty shows are normally scheduled for DJ s with more experience. This summer though, anyone interested in working at WASU can run a specialty program.

ÒWe have a variety of shows this summer,Ó said Brady, ÒItÕs pretty random.Ó

Besides hip-hop and R&B, WASU is featuring a reggae, punk, ska, jazz, and beach music shows during the week, along with a few others.

ÒOf course we still play all the alternative,Ó said Brady. Want to get involved? Call WASU 90.5 ÒThe AppÓ at 262-3171 for more information.

Thaddeus Skeen, ÒThe SolutionÓ and Gerald Foreman appeared on last ThursdayÕs Hip-Hop/R&B specialty show with DJ ÒAfroditeÓ (Tiffany Fant)
